SHRHS In N.J. Science Olympiad

WEST AMWELL TWP. - South Hunterdon High School students will advance to the state Science Olympiad tournament in March, after placing fifth in the Princeton Regional Tournament on Jan. 8.

Seventh-graders Jonathan Wendeborn and Austin Van Treuren placed first in their engineering event, Scrambler. Competitors designed and built a vehicle to carry an egg; the exact distance was announced that day and students had to calibrate the vehicle to reach the finish line.

Jonathan and Austin brought their vehicle within millimeters of the 8-meter end line.

South students, all in grades seven through nine, earned ribbons or medals in 14 of the 16 events in which they competed. Seventeen schools entered the regional tournament.

Other top finishers for South were Alex Belardo and Danny Carpenter, second in rocks and minerals; Emma Carpenter and Alexandria Tucker, third in ecology; and Danny Carpenter and Kiyle Osgood, third in simple machines.

Remaining team placements were: Jake Phillips and Jason Shurts, fifth, disease detectives; Adeline Donnelly and Paul Cally, fifth, junkyard challenge; Sarah Phillips and Tori Smeigocki, sixth, biology processes; Sarah and Jake Phillips, sixth, science word; Emma Carpenter and Paul Cally, seventh, amphibians and reptiles; Austin Van Treuren and Kelly Albanir, seventh, mystery architecture; Tori Smeigocki and Katya Kurtbek, seventh, write it-do it; Kelly Albanir and Gina Scamuffa, eighth, food science; Alexandria Tucker and Gina Scamuffa, eighth, oceanography; Paul Cally and Kiyle Osgood, eighth, tower building; Alex Belardo and Alexandria Tucker, 10th, oceanography; and Katya Kurtbek and Jonathan Wendeborn, 11th, anatomy.
